Setting pinion angle on new Midwest Fab 9 inch

Hey guys.  I got my Midwest Fab 9 inch and I have it in the car.  I have everything adjusted except for the pinion angle.  I have seen so many posts and threads about this and so many different ways to do it.  Some say to measure the housing against the driveshaft, Madman says to just measure the housing in relation to the ground.  I know quite a few of you guys have these rear ends.  What did you do to set yours?   Thanks

mine is 2* nose down relative to the driveshaft

I got a WS6 so it's pretty much better than whatever you got.

i did mine to the ground, but it so happened that the driveshaft angle to rear was about -2 also.  I put my LCA's about -3 degrees upward to front of the car also.

How exactly did you set it like that?  Did you measure the two angles and then add them together or subtract them or something?   I have seen some posts where you subtract the driveshaft angle from the housing angle and then BMR says to add the two angles together to get the pinion angle measurement.

How did you adjust your LCA's like that?  All mine do is adjust the length but I didn't think that would change the angle, just the position of the wheel in the wheel well front to back.

my midwest rear has 4 adjustment holes for adjusting the angle. I raised mine up a higher hole to measured it.

the driveshaft method is what David said, the nose of the pinion downward in relation ro the driveshaft. when looking at the angle on a gauge having the angle 2 degrees to the right of 90 will have the pinion pointing down. you have to look at the driveshaft angle to figure out the actual difference by subtracting the rear from the driveshaft. it helps to draw a pic with the angles you get. this is the "driveshaft angle".

Re: Setting pinion angle on new Midwest Fab 9 inch

I think I got it. Right now my rear end housing is sitting at -.3 (nose down towards ground)and my driveshaft is sitting at +2.3 (going up towards transmission).    If you do the subtraction math that you mentioned and that is in the sticky on ls1tech.  You take -.3 - (+2.3) and you get -2.6.  So right now in relation to the driveshaft my pinion angle is sitting at -2.6.   I just took the car out for the first session of breakin and so far so good. Everything seems good.  I will say that it is noisy now, and I don't mean the gears like they whine or anything, they are quiet,  I mean just the overall rear end when I hit bumps in the road now and stuff.  Its more solid and you can hear it through the rear end.  I guess because all the suspension components I replaced no long her rubbing bushings in them to soften that noise.  This is normal correct?   Other than that everything seems ok.

have a look under the car and see if its hitting anywhere, tunnel, or gas tank.

Re: Setting pinion angle on new Midwest Fab 9 inch

I just checked it again and there is plenty of clearance for the tunnel and the fuel tank and everything.  Its not hitting anything at all that I can see.  I also checked all the bolts and connections and everything is tight.  Its not like a loud bang or anything, its just like noise from the suspension.  The LCA's and panhard rod that I put on have no rubber bushings or anything so I think that might be it.  Some of the noise I hear I am sure is from where the torque arm mounts to the tunnel brace.  If I grab the torque arm and try to move it side to side in that bracket that mounts on the tunnel brace I can get it to move slightly.  I think that might be moving a little when driving and that is probably some of the noise.  The bolts and nuts are all tight though so I don't know what else can be done.  Its not real bad or anything, just different from the 10 bolt.  Do you guys with these rear ends not have any noise at all like I am describing?

Re: Setting pinion angle on new Midwest Fab 9 inch

Ok upon further investigation I think my exhaust may be banging into the housing in 2 locations and maybe that is what is causing my noise.  The problem is I don't see a way to move the exhaust to have it not hit.  Tomorrow I am going to wrap something soft around the exhaust in those locations and take it for a drive and see if its better.   If this is not it then I don't know what could be causing the noise.  I have double checked all the bolts and everything is tight and there is clearance for the tunnel and gas tank so I am sure it is not those issues that you mentioned Dave.  Any other thoughts?
